From BreakDance to Ballet, the Stouffville Academy of Music & Dance is the best choice you can make for your child's Performing Arts education.
All classes are taught with equal emphasis on technique, safety, performance and fun!
Ballet is not only one of the most beautiful forms of, but also the basis for all types of dancing. Ballet is a fundamental component in the training of any serious dancer. Worldwide there is only one true standard for ballet, the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD). All ballet classes at Newman Concepts in Dance are based on the Royal Academy of Dancing (RAD) Syllabus. Developed in England over a century ago, RAD combines the best techniques from around the world.
Jazz is a freer style of dance that is almost impossible to describe. It can be performed to almost any type of music and has a rhythm and flow unlike any other dance form. Every part of the body gets to move. It is fun, constantly changing, and mentally and physically challenging.
Modern or Contemporary Dance is a blend of classical, contemporary and ethnic styles of dance. With its emphasis on strong centrally motivated movement, modern is a fulfilling athletic dance type that is the focus of most post-secondary dance programs.
Lyrical/Contemporary* is a specific style of dance performed to slower lyrical or balladic music. It is a style with more interpretive and emotional elements; it also incorporates elements of ballet, jazz and modern dance.
*Lyrical/Contemporary is open to recreational students also enrolled in ballet or jazz.
Acrobatic Jazz (Acro) is for the student who loves to spend time upside down! Jazz meets gymnastics as students contort, cartwheel and walkover. The beautiful balances, contortions and aerial challenges combine to give Acro its breathtaking appearance.
Tap focuses on rhythm and coordination as students learn the meaning of flaps, timesteps, and wings. Tap class is always great fun because every rhythmic movement is also an artistic, musical creation!
Musical Theatre classes are for the student who enjoys drama as well as dance, and embraces a variety of stylistic forms from Music Hall to Broadway. Students are encouraged to express themselves through exploration of all aspects of the stage.
Hip Hop/Break Dance If you spend your time watching the latest Hip Hop and R&B videos, wishing you could move ‘just like that’, then this is the class for you!
KinderDance First Steps* This program is a wonderful First Step into the exciting world of dance for students 2 - 3 years old, just developing their coordination. Our highly qualified and caring instructors will be your child’s guide as they take there First Steps into a structured activity without Mom or Dad. This class is an excellent first group activity and is structured in a way that makes discovering movement, balance and listening skills easy and fun. Take the First Steps towards introducing your child to dance and physical activity as a healthy lifestyle habit!
*KinderDance First Steps students do not participate in the year end recital.
KinderDance 1 This program is a wonderful introduction into dance and performance for students 3 years old. Students gain skills in rhythm, coordination, alignment, and centering, in these fun and rewarding creative movement classes. A great way for young children to learn to express themselves, take risks, and increase self-confidence.
KinderDance 2 Here students 4 years old are encouraged to build on the skills developed in KinderDance 1, furthering their body and space awareness, introducing left/right/opposite skills and continuing to explore basic strength and flexibility exercises.
KinderDance 3 (5 years old) The goals of KinderDance 3 are to continue to foster creativity, freedom and expression in movement, and to begin the exploration of the concepts that are found in an older child’s dance class as they prepare for ‘graduation’ from our KinderDance Program.
Private lessons are offered for piano, vocal, guitar, drums, violin, saxophone, and clarinet. Other instruments may be available upon request. We have found that private one-on-one instruction allows students to progress at a pace they are comfortable with, and gain the strong understanding of musical techniques. Students can start private lessons as young as 5 years old. Private lessons can begin any time of the year or month so there is no need to wait to get started. Classes begin at thirty minutes in length for beginner students, 45 minutes for intermediate studies, and one hour for advanced classes.
Most students choose to learn their instrument recreationally and do not take exams. If a student does wish to take an exam, our school can fully prepare them for testing. If students wish they may take optional exams offered by the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM). The Royal Conservatory is a national testing board that is based in Toronto. The RCM allows students to test for certain grades in an instrument or voice. For example a student could prepare to take a grade 2 piano exam. To do this the student would purchase the grade 2 music books and learn the required material.
Students will be given an opportunity to perform in recitals and concerts held over the course of the year.
